This symphonic song cycle was inspired by internationally acclaimed author, journalist and refugee advocate Behrouz Boochani’s personal account of his 4 years’ unlawful incarceration under Australia’s offshore detention program in Papua New Guinea.
The Symphonic Song Cycle “No Friend but the Mountains” was produced with the participation of internationally acclaimed Kurdish-Iranian author, journalist and refugee advocate Behrouz Boochani, award-winning Australian classical music composer Luke Styles and in association with the Zelman Symphony, Wise Music and Arts Centre Melbourne. This 2 part series offers an unprecedented access into the political and artistic challenges behind this music production based on Boochani’s book of the same name written on a mobile phone.
